An ultrasound is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within your body, valuable in the diagnosis of a variety of diseases and conditions.

Ultrasound works by bouncing high-energy sound waves off internal tissues or organs to make echoes. The patterns made by the echoes form a picture of the body tissues. This is what is called a sonogram.

A technologist uses a handheld probe to transmit sound waves into the body. These waves reflect off organs and other structures in varying degrees to produce an image.

Ultrasound images are displayed in real-time, allowing the movement of organs, tendons, a fetus, or even blood flow to be visualized and assessed. One of the advantages of ultrasound imaging is that there is no exposure to radiation and no known harmful effects.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During your ultrasound, you will lie comfortably on your back on an examination table that can tilt and move to accommodate the image required. A clear, water-based gel is applied to the skin to facilitate contact. The technician presses a wand against your skin, moving over the area of interest to create images of the inside of the body. Most ultrasound examinations take from 10 minutes to 20 minutes.

HOW TO PREPARE

Ultrasounds are used for a wide range of things, so preparation will depend on the type of exam you will have.
